Teatro Repertorio, IMAGEN bolster theater & the arts

The performing arts in Puerto Rico recently gained two new allies with the establishment of Teatro Repertorio, University of P.R.'s new theater company, and the creation of IMAGEN magazine's new card for important sponsors of the arts.

In the tradition of prestigious theater companies at stateside universities, Teatro Repertorio will provide theater majors and young, aspiring actors a venue through which to develop their talent. The plays will be staged at the UPR Theater.

THE FIRST SEMESTER

The Repertorio kicks off its roster of plays Oct. 27 with "Evita," by Andrew Lloyd Weber & Tim Rice, with Lourdes Robles playing the lead role with Mario Roche and Víctor Santiago. The production features more than 30 actors from the university community and the University Opera Youth (Judlo by its Spanish acronym) and 15 musicians.

"The agreement we reached to develop Teatro Repertorio was that it had to be self-sufficient, so we always look for plays that can appeal to all tastes and can help us achieve that goal," said Edgar García, director of the UPR Theater's cultural activities office, and of "Evita." "Through this theater, we can bring experienced actors together with our talented students who form the drama department. The results of that experience are shared with audiences in works by both international and local authors."

"From Toledo to Madrid," by Tirso de Molina, a classic from Spain's Golden Century, hits the boards Nov. 9 to 13, with Linette Torres, José Caro, Willie Maldonado and Jaime Figueroa as protagonists.

THE SECOND SEMESTER

"Cama Afuera" (Living Out) and "Sala de Espera" (Waiting Room), written by Lisa Loomer, Academy- Award nominee for the movie "Girl Interrupted," who also will be in San Juan, will be presented alternately during the last two weeks of April 2012.

"The Boyfriend" (with roaring '20s music), by Sandy Wilson, also will be presented (date to be announced). The musical, which propelled Julie Andrews to stardom in 1954, holds the record as the longest-running musical in London's West End.

THE IMAGEN CARD

Teatro Repertorio is offering a card—through its partnership with IMAGEN magazine—that allows theater aficionados to become partners in the development and evolution of Teatro Repertorio. The card is open to an exclusive membership of 600 people annually.

The IMAGEN Card identifies holders as sponsoring partners of Teatro Repertorio. Benefits include reserved seating; entry with escort service to the UPR Theater before other patrons; two tickets for each of the five plays to be presented during the 2011/2012 semesters; complimentary drinks; a Teatro Repertorio gift bag with gifts from theater sponsors; discounts and other privileges offered by the main sponsors; the Teatro Repertorio newsletter, which informs members of events and plays held during the year; and annual (2011/2012) membership for $350, or student and University Community memberships for $150, with proper prior identification. IMAGEN Card member reservations must be made seven days prior to the selected date.
