Prepa chief Cruz says he’s retiring

Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority Executive Director Otoniel Cruz Carrillo is stepping down from the helm of the public utility.
Cruz announced Friday that he is retiring after a long career at Prepa. The move is effective Saturday.
Cruz, whose exit had been anticipated for months, had drawn fire from Gov. Luis Fortuño and Prepa board chairman José Ortiz over the pace of efforts to bring down the island’s sky-high electricity costs.
Cruz’s retirement announcement came before a Prepa board meeting that was expected to decide on his future in the post. He made the announcement during a press conference on the widespread power outage that impacted much of the island early Friday afternoon.
