By CB Online Staff

High-ranking Obama administration officials will be in Puerto Rico this week to discuss the problems of drug trafficking and related violence with local officials.

The security summit is slated to kick of Wednesday under the direction of officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and subordinate agencies including Customs & Border Patrol.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is scheduled to arrive on the island Friday and meet with Gov. Luis Fortuño and Resident Commissioner. She will also travel to Brazil and the Dominican Republic this week.

The summit agenda includes work meetings with Puerto Rico’s top two elected officials and other key security figures such as U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodríguez and Police Superintendent Héctor Pesquera.

Fortuño and Pierluisi have been pushing Washington for additional federal resources to combat drug trafficking and related violence along the nation’s Caribbean border – namely Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
